RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) — At Coffee and the Cats, the unlikely pairing of coffee and felines has proven to be a winning combination. Since its grand opening in April, this innovative coffee shop has established a fruitful collaboration with the Humane Society of the Black Hills, successfully facilitating the adoption of 26 cats into loving homes.
Co-owner Lukas Linn shared that the shop’s partnership with the Humane Society operates seamlessly, mirroring the adoption procedures typically followed by pet stores but with the added benefit of a café environment where patrons can interact with the cats. “We have streamlined the process with the Humane Society, and our approach has yielded approximately one adoption per week,” Linn explained.
Linn, along with his sister, has been actively involved with the Humane Society from a young age, engaging in various activities such as caring for cats and walking dogs. This long-standing connection naturally led to the idea of a cat café and the decision to partner with the organization.
Cassie Sloan, marketing and volunteer coordinator at the Humane Society of the Black Hills, highlighted the success of this collaboration. “Every cat at Coffee and the Cats starts its journey as a stray or a surrendered pet and is given a fresh start in a new, loving environment. Our partnership has been incredibly rewarding,” Sloan remarked.
Patrons can enjoy a range of beverages, pastries, and meal options at Coffee and the Cats, but those interested in meeting the cats must book a spot in the designated “Kitty Cove.” Linn emphasized the value of this setup in enhancing the adoption experience. “The ability for potential adopters to interact with cats in a relaxed setting helps them better understand the cats’ personalities, which can lead to more successful adoptions and fewer returns,” he said.
