In response to growing demand, Colchester Hospital is preparing to open a second Costa Coffee location, just a short distance from its existing shop. The new Costa Coffee, set to open in early August, is currently under construction within the hospital’s main building, near the Stock Shop.
This new branch will differ from the current Costa Coffee, operated by WH Smith, which is positioned near the hospital’s front entrance. Unlike its predecessor, the new outlet will not feature seating but will offer a convenient click-and-collect service, allowing customers to pre-purchase their items.
A prominent Costa Coffee sign has been placed near the construction site, alongside a smaller notice indicating “Costa Coffee fit out” as work progresses. This new location aims to address peak time demand by providing a swift service option for staff, patients, and visitors.
WH Smith, the operator of both Costa Coffee branches at the hospital, has highlighted that the second branch will enhance service efficiency. A spokesperson stated, “The new Costa Coffee within Colchester Hospital is set to open early August. This addition will complement the existing units managed by WH Smith and will ensure a faster service during busy periods.”
Nick Sammons, Director of Estates and Facilities at the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, added, “The upcoming Costa Coffee café will cater to patients, visitors, and staff, located next to The Stock Shop near the main entrance. We recognize the high demand for on-site retail facilities and are aiming to alleviate the pressure. This new location will offer a quicker alternative to the existing Costa near the main entrance, which will continue to provide seating for those who prefer a more relaxed experience.”
In terms of franchise costs, opening a Costa Coffee franchise generally ranges from $200,000 to $500,000 or more, reflecting the significant investment involved in expanding the brand.
