In Shangwangyu, a peaceful village near Beijing’s Huairou district, a trend of rural coffeehouses has transformed the area into a popular destination.
Previously home to just 100 residents, Shangwangyu now hosts three coffee shops. Heyin Cafe, located 50 kilometers from Beijing, attracts over 500 visitors daily on weekends. Surrounded by a lake and mountains, the cafe offers a picturesque escape from city life.
Wei Ming, owner of Heyin Cafe, was drawn to the village by its stunning natural views. “The panoramic scenery made me want to create a unique retreat,” Wei said.
Another nearby spot, Meiluo Cafe, founded by Wang Chunli in 2022, has also gained popularity. The cafe blends traditional Chinese design with local touches and features Chinese teas alongside coffee. Wang’s father, initially skeptical, is now proud of the success.
These coffeehouses are part of a broader trend of rural cafes in China, enhancing local tourism and boosting the economy. With their scenic settings, they attract urbanites seeking tranquility and have revitalized Shangwangyu’s local economy and community.
