A study by Dr. Nency Kagathara at Zydus Medical College in India reveals that consuming more than 400 mg of caffeine daily—equivalent to four cups of coffee or two energy drinks—can disrupt the parasympathetic nervous system, raising blood pressure and heart rates.
The research, involving 92 healthy adults, found that chronic high caffeine intake led to significant increases in heart rate and blood pressure. These results were shared at the American College of Cardiology conference in Delhi.
The US Food and Drug Administration and Mayo Clinic consider 400 mg of caffeine per day safe for most people, but sensitivity varies. Caffeine stimulates stress hormones, affecting cardiovascular health.
Dr. Kagathara highlighted that women in business roles had the highest intake, and those consuming over 600 mg daily showed notably elevated heart rates and blood pressure. “Awareness of these risks is crucial for better heart health,” she emphasized.
