Recess, the new café at Griffith Shops, is redefining local dining with its all-day breakfast and lunch offerings, along with premium locally roasted coffee. Located where Griffith Vietnamese Restaurant once stood, Recess honors its predecessor with the old sign.
Founded by Anthony Ianelli and Scott Brewer, the café aims to be a community hub. Brewer’s background in coffee roasting from Barrio and his past at Terra have shaped Recess’s quality.
Head chef Vance Arellano, formerly of Silo Bakery, has created a menu suitable for both quick breakfasts and relaxed lunches. The café’s bustling atmosphere during the opening week suggests strong local interest.
The Breakfast Burrito, featuring avocado, salsa criolla, hash brown, and turkey sausage, was enjoyable, complemented by a zesty herbed mayo. The lunch menu includes intriguing options like Fusilli Calabrese and fried chicken sandwiches, though vegetarian choices are limited.
Recess stands out for its thoughtful acoustics, with Tasmanian-made speakers and vintage vinyl adding to the ambiance. The interior, designed by MyMyMy Architecture and Kristin Ianelli, offers a cozy, inviting space.
Dessert highlights include the fluffy Buttermilk Pancake with maple syrup and butter. The café also features a pastry cabinet and sells its coffee and Terra-made condiments.
Located at 6B Barker Street, Griffith Shops, Recess is open Monday to Friday, 6:30 am to 3:30 pm, and weekends, 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. Follow them on Instagram for more updates.
