Panera Bread has appointed Mark Shambura, a seasoned marketing executive previously with Papa John’s and MOD Pizza, as its Chief Marketing Officer.
In his new role, Shambura will oversee all marketing operations at Panera Bread. This includes steering brand and product development, consumer insights, and enhancing the company’s digital loyalty initiatives. Panera Bread’s loyalty program, MyPanera, boasts 52 million members and provides exclusive early access to new products and special discounts. Subscribers to the program also benefit from the Sip Club beverage subscription available in-store.
Panera Bread’s press release highlighted Shambura’s recent success at Papa John’s, where he led a significant brand revitalization during his tenure as Chief Marketing Officer. Shambura’s efforts included implementing a contemporary omnichannel strategy that successfully modernized the fast-food chain’s appeal to both new and loyal customers.
José Alberto Dueñas, CEO of Panera Brands, expressed enthusiasm about Shambura’s appointment. “Mark’s extensive experience in building brands and leading marketing teams within the fast-casual sector is exactly what we need. We are excited to have him join Panera Bread as we continue to advance our brand and drive growth with a focus on quality food that customers feel good about.”
Shambura succeeds Eduardo Luz, who left Panera Bread in October 2023 to become the CEO of P.F. Chang’s.
Founded in 1987, Panera Bread operates over 2,100 locations across North America. The company is part of Panera Brands, a JAB Holding-managed group that also includes Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels. In July 2024, reports emerged that Panera Brands was considering the sale of Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels for approximately $1.5 billion.
