Starbucks in Brockton to Limit Seating During School Dismissal Hours

by Jessica

A newly opened Starbucks on Belmont Street in Brockton has ignited debate with its decision to restrict indoor seating during school dismissal hours.

Starting soon, the coffee shop will limit access to its seating area from 1 to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, to deter large gatherings of students after school.

Brockton Police Lieutenant Paul Bonanca informed the school committee earlier this month that the measure is intended to address security concerns. Local students often congregate at nearby fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Taco Bell, which have already implemented similar restrictions.

“In the past, we’ve had some issues with local businesses around the high school, and they’re taking these steps as a precaution,” Bonanca stated.

Starbucks told NewsCenter 5 that while the lobby will remain open for customers to place orders during the restricted hours, indoor seating will be off-limits.

Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan opposes the seating restriction, expressing his wish for the store to remain fully operational during all business hours.

“This new business is a wonderful addition to our busy city, and it should be fully open every day during business hours,” Sullivan said. “I’m hopeful we can work together to find a solution that supports this merchant while ensuring safety for both workers and customers.”

Reactions among residents are mixed.

“The high school is right there. Students will find places to hang out, whether it’s here or somewhere else. I don’t think this move will stop it,” commented Brockton resident Russ Swan.

This decision by Starbucks comes in the wake of broader concerns about student behavior in the area. Last year, Brockton school officials sought help from Governor Maura Healey and the Massachusetts National Guard to manage these issues—a request that was ultimately denied.

In response to the new policy, Mayor Sullivan is requesting a meeting with Starbucks management and the Brockton police chief to discuss the store’s operating hours and explore possible alternatives.
