Dirty Girl Coffee: Empowering Appalachian Women and Revitalizing Glouster

by Jessica

Nestled in the village of Glouster, approximately 25 minutes north of Uptown, Dirty Girl Coffee is making waves with its unique blend of community engagement and business innovation. Located at 82 High St., the roaster, which began operations in 2015, relocated to its current address in July 2023.

Jenna Keiffer, who serves as both media and social change manager and barista at Dirty Girl Coffee, highlighted the shop’s multifaceted approach to business. “We handle all our operations here, including online sales and wholesale distribution,” Keiffer explained. “We ship our products to companies across the United States.”

Originally established in 2015 by Cavarozzi and Kara Tripp, Dirty Girl Coffee started with home-roasted beans sold at local farmers markets. Cavarozzi revealed that the name of the coffee shop was inspired by a memorable boating incident involving her dog, Gypsy. “She jumped on the boat, shaking off mud and lake grime, and we joked about being a bunch of ‘dirty girls,’” Cavarozzi recounted.

Beyond its coffee offerings, Dirty Girl Coffee is committed to giving back to the Glouster community. “Our primary mission is to support the town that has supported us,” Keiffer noted. “Jane is actively involved with the Glouster Revitalization Organization (GRO), which focuses on community-driven projects.”

GRO aims to channel resources from local businesses into enhancing community infrastructure, including the creation of safe spaces and the revitalization of neglected buildings. Cavarozzi serves as the board president of GRO.

Dirty Girl Coffee also extends its support to women in rural and Appalachian Ohio. Cavarozzi, who chairs the Ohio Women’s Coalition (OWC) and sits on the board of the Athens County Foundation (ACF), is dedicated to advancing economic and social opportunities for women in these regions. OWC, based in Columbus, focuses on improving economic conditions for women statewide, while ACF is committed to the development of Athens County.

The coffee shop is open daily, operating from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. Dirty Girl Coffee beans are also available at Jefferson Market, Kindred Market, and other locations across southeast Ohio, with details accessible on the Dirty Girl Coffee website.
