Nestled on Gammon Walk, Nellie’s Coffee Bar stands out not only as a café but as a community anchor focused on aiding young individuals in North Devon, particularly those leaving the care system. The establishment’s mission transcends typical café operations; all profits are directed to Blue Elephant Future Steps CiC, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting those transitioning from children’s homes.
Nellie’s Coffee Bar extends its support by offering job opportunities specifically for young adults with care backgrounds, equipping them with essential work experience and resume-building skills. Abi Milton, Operations Director, emphasized, “Our commitment extends beyond serving excellent coffee. We embrace a ‘purpose before profit’ ethos, similar to Blue Elephant’s, and offer a trauma-informed approach to employment. We understand the unique challenges faced by those entering the workforce from care and aim to provide a supportive environment. Payton, our café manager, brings valuable insight into the care system, helping us challenge stigmas and offer meaningful opportunities.”
The café, which recently earned a five-star hygiene rating, operates from 8am to 4pm, Monday through Saturday. Its menu features a diverse selection of drinks, cakes, pastries, and a lunch menu with jacket potatoes, artisan ciabatta sandwiches, and paninis. Future plans include expanding the menu and introducing new initiatives such as supper clubs and seasonal events.
Abi Milton and her team view Nellie’s Coffee Bar as more than just a business—it’s a commitment to transforming the futures of young people leaving care. Partnering with Blue Elephant Childcare, they aim to provide both emotional and practical support, including the potential development of tiny homes to help these young adults transition smoothly into independence while staying close to their former care environments.
