Minnesota-based Mill City Roasters has announced plans to move to a new 40,000-square-foot facility in Northeast Minneapolis, set to open in October 2024.
The company stated that the renovated mid-century-style building will play a crucial role in establishing Minneapolis as “the Midwest hub of specialty coffee” in the United States. The new site will serve as Mill City’s headquarters, training center, and manufacturing plant, allowing the company to bring a larger portion of its coffee roaster and equipment manufacturing from China to the U.S.
Currently, Mill City assembles the chassis, panels, and fuel systems of its roasters at a facility in Shenzhen, while sourcing other components from Europe and East Asia. The new facility will also include a 5,000-square-foot commercial roastery to expand its private label roasting and green coffee evaluation programs.
Founded in 2013, Mill City specializes in manufacturing tools and machinery for specialty coffee roasters. Its MCR line features batch capacities ranging from 1kg to 60kg, with the high-capacity MCR-60 capable of roasting over 3,400 pounds (1,540kg) of coffee per day.
Mill City’s clientele includes several specialty coffee businesses such as Portrait Coffee in Georgia, River Roasters Coffee in Ohio, Frame Coffee Co in Texas, Silk City Roasters in Connecticut, and Blk & Bld in Iowa. Internationally, the company serves clients like Doppio Roasters in the UAE, Pinecone Roasters in Ireland, Candy Cane in the Czech Republic, and Koyanagi Coffee in Japan.
Additionally, Mill City plans to convert its current manufacturing facility into a fully-staffed co-roasting space for local coffee entrepreneurs and is actively seeking partners to manage the new facility.
