Starbucks has announced the appointment of John Elliott, the former Chief Technology Officer of Sainsbury’s, as Vice President of Technology for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. In this role, Elliott will oversee the execution of Starbucks’ technology strategy across 42 markets, focusing on in-store digital services, the Rewards loyalty app, and mobile ordering and delivery.
“John joins Starbucks at a time when we are building on our strong growth in the region. His impressive track record, particularly in consumer-facing food retailing, will help support our strategy to enhance the partner and customer experience, improve our supply chain, and evolve our app and mobile ordering platform,” said Duncan Moir, President of Starbucks EMEA.
Elliott’s career began at Accenture in 2002, and he later held various roles, including Head of Applications and Development at Morrisons. After a stint as a Programme Director at Oracle, he joined Sainsbury’s in 2017 as Director of Technology for Food Commercial & Supply Chain, eventually becoming Chief Technology Officer in January 2023.
Starbucks opened its first European store in the UK in 1998, followed by its entry into the Middle East with a store in Kuwait the following year. The company relocated its EMEA headquarters from Amsterdam to London in 2015 and currently operates over 5,000 stores across 31 European and 11 MENA markets.
