PTG Energy’s Coffee Surge: 30% Sales Growth Expected This Year!

by Jessica

Bangkok-based PTG Energy, a prominent operator in the petrol station sector, is set to significantly enhance its PunThai Coffee brand by adding over 250 outlets by the end of this year. This expansion is part of a broader strategy that aims to establish 1,000 new coffee shops by 2025.

Currently, PTG Energy manages 1,020 PunThai Coffee locations across Thailand, with nearly 60% situated within or adjacent to its network of 2,250 petrol stations. The company targets a total of 1,300 PunThai Coffee stores by the close of 2024, which would fulfill its goal of launching 400 new shops this year.

In May 2024, PTG Energy outlined an ambitious vision to grow its coffee shop footprint to 5,000 outlets by 2027. This planned expansion aligns with PTG Energy’s commitment to invest THB 6 billion (approximately $180.7 million) in enhancing its petrol station infrastructure. The company anticipates the addition of 60 new petrol stations and the renovation of 100 existing sites in 2025.

To bolster its coffee supply chain and address the rising demand at PunThai Coffee outlets, PTG Energy has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thailand’s Royal Forest Department, the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, and the state-owned Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC). This collaboration aims to support coffee farmers from hilltribe communities in northern Thailand by developing suitable forest areas for coffee cultivation, sharing best practices in planting, improving product quality, and enhancing traceability.

PTG Energy projects a 30% increase in PunThai Coffee sales this year, expecting an average of 120 cups sold per store daily, compared to 90 cups per day in 2023. PunThai Coffee is currently the third-largest branded coffee chain in Thailand, following Café Amazon, which operates 4,500 stores, and Inthanin, with 1,000 locations—both owned by Thai petrol station operators.

In a similar vein, Caltex has announced plans to expand its partnership with the Thai coffee chain Chao Doi. As of October 2024, Caltex operates 38 Chao Doi coffee shops within its network of 530 petrol stations and aims to increase this number to 200 over the next five years, underscoring the growth potential in Thailand’s petrol station retail market.
