Pure Intentions Coffee has officially opened the doors to its new 16,000-square-foot production headquarters in southwest Charlotte, marking a significant step in its commitment to providing high-quality wholesale coffee throughout North Carolina.
The new facility features a state-of-the-art 60-kilo-capacity Probat P60 roaster, strategically located near the South Carolina border. This advanced equipment complements the company’s existing 35-kilo U.S. Roaster Corp machine, both housed within a 3,500-square-foot roasting area.
In addition to roasting, the facility includes dedicated spaces for packaging roasted coffees, producing and canning cold brew, shipping and receiving, and storing dry goods. Approximately 4,500 square feet is allocated for offices, a reception area, and a training and cupping lab.
As the company transitions to its new headquarters, it bids farewell to its previous location in an industrial area north of downtown Charlotte. “The old facility was a bit of a patchwork building that we made work for what we needed at the time,” said Pure Intentions Founder Matt Yarmey. “Our new space is a relatively new building built for manufacturing and is significantly more well-suited to our needs. It’s not only an upgrade in space but also in efficiency and purpose.”
In the training and cupping lab, Head Roaster and Director of Coffee Matt While leads the evaluation of coffee samples, focusing on creating appealing and interesting offerings sourced from importers such as Hacienda La Minita, Volcafe, and Crop to Cup. “We don’t play too much in the extremes of coffee flavor notes,” Yarmey explained. “Most of our roasting ethos is to understand what the bulk of coffee drinkers enjoy and create that experience in the highest quality and complexity we can.”
Pure Intentions is committed to its wholesale roasting business and has no plans to host public programming or operate its own cafes. Instead, the company offers free training for baristas employed by its wholesale clients at its “skills campus,” which is now equipped with a Nuova Simonelli Black Eagle espresso machine, a Marco SP9 pourover module, various sizes of drip coffee makers, and other specialized café equipment.
“Our entire business relies on café, restaurant, and grocery store owners trusting us and our abilities,” Yarmey said. “This focus keeps us laser-focused on doing the right thing for our customers, allowing us to remain nimble and competitive to ensure we stay relevant and service-oriented.”
Yarmey, who previously served as a director in risk advisory services for a Charlotte-based consulting group, founded Pure Intentions in 2011 with a half-pound-capacity Gene Café air roaster in his apartment. The following year, he expanded his capacity to 12 pounds using an Ambex roaster in a 900-square-foot industrial garage.
Reflecting on the company’s growth over the past 13 years, Yarmey remarked, “It’s been incredible to experience the growth we’ve seen. October 18 is our 13th birthday, and to now be in a space that feels like it can support our continued growth gives us that much more confidence in our future.”
