In a significant step toward enhancing the sustainability and resilience of the coffee supply chain, the G7 has launched an innovative initiative that will initially target pilot countries in Africa, including Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, and Malawi. The plan is set to expand into Central America and Asia in the future. Gerardo Patacconi, Head of Operations for the International Coffee Organization (ICO), made these announcements during a press briefing on the sidelines of the G7 Development meeting in Pescara.
Patacconi highlighted the groundbreaking nature of the initiative, noting that it marks the first time G7 nations and their partners have specifically focused on a single sector. He stated, “The initiative, promoted by the Italian presidency of the G7, has already gained attention from the G7 Environment group and the leaders’ summit in Borgo Egnazia. Today’s discussions within the G7 Development group further underscore the recognition of the coffee sector’s significance.”
The urgency of the initiative is underscored by the severe impacts of climate change on coffee production. Patacconi warned that without proactive measures, the price of coffee could skyrocket to as much as $100 per cup. Currently, approximately 5 to 6 million coffee producers live below the poverty line, reinforcing the need for coordinated action among G7 nations. “This initiative aims to synchronize efforts across G7 countries to support the coffee sector and establish a public-private fund,” he explained.
He further noted that the initiative has facilitated dialogue between G7 countries and the global coffee industry, particularly involving major Italian companies like Lavazza and Illy. On the funding front, the initiative is anchored in Italy’s Mattei Plan, which concentrates on African investments, but aims for a broader reach with global investments in the coffee sector. Ultimately, Patacconi expressed hope that this initiative would culminate in a comprehensive work plan involving UN agencies and other international organizations to implement sustainable solutions in various countries.
