U.S. Army Garrison Japan’s Army Community Service team has partnered with the USO to host a Halloween-themed “Coffee Connections” event on October 30, aimed at helping military spouses forge connections in their new community.
The USO reports that Coffee Connections events are designed to combat the feelings of isolation that often accompany relocation to a new duty station. Recognizing the unique challenges military spouses face in building social networks after a move, the event seeks to provide a supportive environment for participants.
Mary Wanjohi, a program analyst with Army Community Service at Camp Zama, played a key role in coordinating this inaugural event with the USO team from Yokota Air Base. “It’s crucial for the community to engage with the various family programs available, especially this first-ever event on Camp Zama,” Wanjohi stated. “Many military spouses experience isolation upon arrival, and this event will facilitate connections with others in similar situations.”
Wanjohi also noted that the gathering will offer a “great space to relax, learn, and network” among attendees.
Christian Asante, an area operations specialist with the USO, highlighted the importance of community for military spouses. “Those who move to Japan often encounter language barriers, making it challenging to explore new experiences, particularly if they lack existing friends or family in the area,” he explained. Asante emphasized that Coffee Connections helps newcomers establish friendships, as many attendees will have lived in the region longer and can offer valuable guidance.
Command Sergeant Major David A. Rio, the senior enlisted adviser for USAG Japan, underscored the necessity of such support networks in an overseas setting, where spouses may feel geographically isolated from their traditional support systems. He expressed a commitment to strengthening ties with the USO, stating, “The USO is a vital resource that offers numerous benefits to military personnel and their families. Their historical support for our Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program makes events like Coffee Connections an important expansion of their outreach.”
All military spouses are invited to attend the event, scheduled for October 30 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Camp Zama ACS building.
